Eskil Vogt returns to directing (as well as scriptwriting duties) with this stunning piece of genre cinema where the arrival of a new family within a housing complex heralds the children discovering they may have special powers. Ida and her autistic older sister Anna are newcomers to an apartment complex along with their parents – when they meet the bullied Ben and the loner Aisha , the quartet slowly begin to discover an array of superpowers – at first what seems like childhood fun slowly turns dark as divisions within the group lead to battle-lines being drawn: there can only be one survivor from this playground.
Building on his witty and visually inventive debut, Eskil Vogt explores the power dynamics amongst children, carefully looking at social and racial divisions without ever taking his eye of the genre credentials – the result is a striking, intelligent and utterly brilliant piece of cinema that culminates in one of the most impressive climaxes of recent times.
