- Patrick Owen, Fangoria
“Sadistic, cruel, nightmarish, disturbing and provocative… A unique journey into bizarre cinema”
- Mario Dorminsky, Cinema Novo
After years of watching all shapes of trasngressive and confrontational cinema, do you consider yourself to be relatively shock-proof? If you’re quick to answer “why, yes”, step into our screening of Subconscious Cruelty and let us know if you still feel that way when you come out the other side!
Shot on 16mm over a period of six years, this equally ferocious and gorgeous dose of fluid-drenched assault art has had audiences fainting since its release in 2000. Over the years, it has been alternately showered with accolades and outrage, not to mention, confiscations. Ten years later, it remains banned in numerous countries and is now considered to be the most extreme film ever created in the history of Canadian cinema.
A surrealistic creation from writer/director Karim Hussain (BUFF award-winner for La Belle Bête) and producer Mitch Davis (Divided Into Zero), Subconscious Cruelty is an anthology film structured like a fever dream that holds on tight and twists until it bleeds through the relationships found within visceral horror and the subconscious. There are sequences here unlike any you have seen depicted on screen; poetic, perverse, bursting with carnage and carnality. Cruelty presents an unforgettable visual and sonic experience that will evoke strong reactions, good and bad, from just about any viewer.
To mark the occasion of the film’s 10th anniversary, BUFF will be screening the single remaining uncut 35mm print known to exist in the world. This will be the first time this notoriously disturbing film has ever been shown in Massachusetts. ADULTS ONLY.
* No one under 18 permitted into this screening.
